Letter from Bishop Elaine

After Haiti had shaken off the fetters of bondage, and long after her freedom and
dependence had been recognized by all other civilized nations, we [the US] continued to refuse to acknowledge the face and treated her as outside the sisterhood of nations.
-Frederick Douglass, Chicago World’s Fair, 1893

What I see coming is a takeover by the international community, building the Haiti of their dream.  And then of course the Haitian people won’t be able to live on somebody else’s dream and things will go sour again.

-Patrick Elie, Haitian Activist, September 15, 2011

ADULT BIBLE STUDY

         An Adult Class
         on Aspects of Faith

        9:15 AM Fireside Room WUMC
                   Sunday Mornings
(resuming after the New Year begins)

Pastor Debbie will lead an adult study on aspects of faith using
     Rob Bell's Nooma Series.

Jesus lived with the awareness that God is doing something, right here, right now, and anybody can be a part of it. He encouraged his listeners to search, to question, to wrestle with the implications of what he was saying and doing. He inspired, challenged, provoked, comforted, and invited people to be open to God’s work in this world. Wherever he went, whatever he did, Jesus started discussions about what matters most, because for Jesus, God is always inviting us to open our eyes and join in. NOOMA is a series of short films that explore our world from a perspective of Jesus.

NOOMA is an invitation to search, question, and join the discussion.

HELPING the CRISIS IN THE HORN OF AFRICA

Our UMCOR is providing famine relief in the horn of Africa.
Ethiopia, Kenya and Dibouti have suffered drought conditions for a
number of years causing widespread hunger in the area and the UN
has declared famine conditions. To help bring relief through UMCOR,
please write a check to the church with a notation for "Africa Relief."
Keep the many people suffering in your prayers.

SPRING STORMS 2011

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was devastatingly hit by a mile-wide,
swirling tornado on April 27, 2011, after some 200 tornadoes had
already plummeted through eight southern states just days before.
News reports said the outbreak was considered the deadliest in US
history.  It battered the south, leaving a swath of destruction that
killed nearly 300 people in six states, flattened homes and
businesses, and caused billion of dollars of damage. Alabama was
the hardest-hit state, with an estimated 213 deaths.
